Fantastic experience

I had a fantastisch week on board the discovery. We made a lot of nice dives (elphinstone-daedalus-brothers) and the crew was very helpfull en kind. We didn’t see the big Fish (longimanus shark) but that is the risk of diving but does not affect the trip.

I'll definitely come again (when new mattresses are provided).

Thresher sharks, manta, giant murray eels, enormous eagle ray, a lot of blue spotted stingrays, Napoleons, tunas, a turtle, ... and the (still) very rich reef life with thousands of all kinds of exotic fishes. And: our dive guides always looking out for oceanic white tips and hammerheads which they couldn't find, unfortunately. Of course: because we were out of season (which is Oct.-Nov.) but then: you never know 😉.

Super attentative crew

The Thistlegorm wreck-dive. The guides picked our divetime based on the boats around us, so we ended up with the wreck to ourselves.

kind crew, stunning reefs and super atmosphere

My trip was just perfect, the crew was constantly trying to help us divers and the diving was amazing. Our dive guides were good. I was extremely lucky with the group, there were people from many different counties and everyone was very nice. The food was very good for the circumstances. Unfortunately we had to skip the Elphinstone reef due to the rough weather conditions, so I can not rate this reef. But The Brothers and Daedalus were just insane. The corals were healthy and the pelagic encounters simply incredible. I would do this trip again at any time.

Good diving, but stomach problems

Review  Brothers, Daedalus, Elphinstone (BDE) August 2023.  Diving vessel: Discovery 2, Discovery divers.  Guests writing this review:  Divemaster (500+ dives and 6 previous liveaboards) and Advanced Open Water diver (30 dives), Sweden.  Cabin on middle deck: 4,5/5.  Air condition worked, but not great, it was 25-27 degrees in the cabin when the AC was on maximum cold (outside temp was 30-34 degrees). The cabins on the lower deck had more effective AC. Double bed, which was quite hard. Bathroom was good, very hot shower, soap is available. No hooks for towels etc. Fire alarm in the cieling of the cabin. There was a small refridgerator in this cabin, but not in the ones on the lower deck. Tv in the cabin, but it does not work while out on the sea. Each guest gets two big towels and one small. Cabin and bathroom is cleaned daily. Our cabin smelled often of cigerette smoke in the evenings since it was behind the captains cabin. More hooks would have been practical and would have made the cabin and bathroom more tidy.  Wifi:  2/5.  Fairly slow and does not work while sailing far from the coast. Which is quite nice, and make people socialise more.  Food:  3,5-4/5.  Not great variation, same breakfast (pancake, toas, eggs, falafel, yoghurt) everyday and the lunch/dinner were quite similar during the week (Chicken/beef/fish, pasta/rice, some salad and bread). Roast turkey was served one evening. Quite a few guests became sick in the stomach after a few days, but it is hard to say if this was caused by the food on the boat. No hand sanitizer close to the plates/cutlary. There are always different flavours of tea, instant coffee, ice and different soft drinks available in the saloon or middle deck bar. Some days an afternoon snack was served (fruit, cake, pizza slice or smoothie). Some days the dinner were served a bit too late in the evening. Beer and wine is available, extra charge. Guides:  3,5/5.  Two egyptian guides, 8 guests per guide, both spoke ok english. Good breefings and dive plans. The guide we had were sometimes swimming too much, which stretched the group, so the buddy teams ended too far apart. He was not particulary enthusiastic about his job.  First day, check dive and safety information, local site, Hurghada: 5/5.  Every guest must carry a dive computer and a SMB and show how to deploy it on the first dive. SMB can be rented. We also practiced diving from a zodiac (back-roll) the first day.  Boat:  4,5/5.  Nice areas for both shade and sun on middle and sun deck. Quiet engine and stable on the sea, though the sea can be very rough and on this itinerary there are many overnight sailings as long distances need to be covered to get from Hurghada to BDE. Recharge station for cameras and dive computers is on the dive deck and there are also some power sockets in the saloon. Two toilets on the dive deck. General good egyptian cleaniness of the boat. The boat holds 22 guests, we were 16 guests on this trip. It did not feel crowded, but it probably would if the boat was full. There is a posibility to hang TRX-bands or rings for physical activity from the sun roof on the middle deck. No indication that environment friendly cleaning products were used, or any recycling garbage.  Safety and medical:  4,5/5.  Two big tanks with oxygen on the dive deck. Box with a lot of medication for seasickness, ear infection, diareea, dehydration etc is available free of charge. No medication for constipation. Amoxicillin is avaliable. There is no Ciprofloxacin so bring your own. Two rescue life rafts, each holding 16 persons. Fire extinguisher and two life jackets in each cabin. Maximum dive depth is 30 meters, maximum dive time 60 minutes. One guest went to 43 meters with 30% Nitrox and were still allowed to dive afterwards. Closest recompression chamber is in Hurghada. Diving is not allowed after drinking alcohol the same day.  Diving:  DBE: 4,5/5. Local dives: 2,5/5.  Wake-up is at 5:45 in

Fair value for the money

Overall satisfied with the experience. Things I would've liked to see: more freedom for very experienced divers, a bit more variation in the food. Only main issue: the AC in the cabins is more off an on/off thing (adjusting all the controls doesn't do much) and very loud. Overall still a very nice trip and I'd book again a trip with this boat and crew.

Red Sea dive safari

We saw hammerheads, whaleshark and turtles, beautiful coral reefs and with nightdives all kind of creatures that are hiding during the day inside the coral structures.
