The Explorer 1 is a Catamaran specially designed for remote diving expeditions in the Seychelles. Accommodating up to 6 divers, the Explorer 1 offers comfort and personalized service for both recreational and technical diving adventures. There are 3 cabins on board: Aldabra, a master cabin featuring twin beds with a private bathroom and toilet; Granite, a cabin with twin beds; and Amirantes, a cozy cabin with two single bunk beds. Amenities include adjustable air conditioning, Wi-Fi (except on remote islands), USB outlets, and entertainment options such as music and video.
The Explorer 1 is committed to sustainability and adopts a zero-waste approach by providing eco-friendly toiletries and eliminating single-use plastics. The boat uses 100% organic products for cleaning and maintenance, respecting the local ecosystem. Safety is paramount, and the Explorer 1 features an oxygen therapy station and a hyperbaric decompression chamber. The highly qualified crew is trained in emergency response.

Alone on the boat
To our amazement, we (two divers) were alone on the Explorer 1. We were accompanied and cared for by three crew members (captain, dive guide and cook) during the 6 days - thank you very much! We had a nice week. The Explorer 1 is a small boat. We paid the surcharge for the master bedroom with its own bathroom, but the cabin and the equipment are a bit old. Negative in terms of price-performance ratio from our point of view is the fact that the cabin has no air conditioning, although this is advertised. There was a fan in the cabin. When asked, we were told that air conditioning would cost 30 EUR per night extra (!?). In any case, it became very hot and stuffy in the cabin, which is at the expense of the quality of sleep. The program was individual - due to the weather conditions, we skipped the islands of Bird and Denis and moved around Mahé, Pralin and La Digue during the six days. The food was always freshly prepared - often there was fresh fish that was fished only a few hours before, fantastic! We had plenty of space on the dive deck. Usually there were 3 dives a day - twice we also did a night dive. Topographically, the dive sites/dives are all similar. The diving tanks were always very well filled. We did without nitrox. The dives are usually between 15 and 20m.

Great dive spots
Great divespots with schools of fish on a dizzying scale. Super friendly crew. Partly remote diving areas. Amirantes was not approached on this trip after all.

Diving in the Seychelles
The trip was wonderful, diving was OK (water visibility was not the greatest). Our dive guide was very energetic and friendly but he was a little to focused on attracting sharks EVERY dive that we (or at least I felt) were very rushed over reefs and general beauty. The food was great and the chef very talented. The whole trip was very relaxed and FUN.

Great small-group liveaboard
The liveaboard with Explorer 1 was great. Since we were only three divers with three crew on the boat, the service was very personal and always adapted to the external conditions (swell, weather, diving conditions). From dive guide Joey to Captain Sparrow to cook Rosie, this was a great team. Thank you very much for the great week.

Cruising is not fun!
Not comfortable boat. A/C announced and decompression chamber missing. 1 small toilet and spartan shower cabin for 7 people. A cook who is not very invested and who is satisfied with the minimum. Canned fruit for dessert at the 1st dinner ... no comfortable place to relax....expensive for the service offered. Let's stay on a positive note, very easy dives and rich in biodiversity. Very nice support during these. The captain of the boat was on top! Nice continuation to Kalil and Lana.

Nice crew and good food but poor visibility and many boat issues make it not worth the cost.
The good: Delicious food and friendly crew. The diving around La digue and Praslin was fun with tons of fish. We saw many reef sharks, octopi, large schools of fish, and a few rays. The bad: We tried to go out to bird island but sadly the visibility was so bad that it wasn’t really worth it. Unfortunately this had a big impact on the trip because it meant an 8 and a 6 hour day of rough seas in a small boat for nothing and we didn’t get to see the big pelagic species. This boat is just not really cut out for big ocean crossings. It is small and gets tossed around but also has/had multiple problems: -the overhead window in the bedroom was not water tight so whenever we had rough seas (at least half the days) we had a puddle of sea water in the middle of the bed. Whenever it rained (basically every day) we had a puddle of fresh water. We couldn’t keep the window open over night because rain would come in so it would get very hot and humid in the cabin. The AC is another additional charge (there are many extras with this boat despite the fact that it is already expensive) and didn’t even work half the time. Eventually our cabin became so humid that there was condensation on the walls and ceiling to the extent that it started dripping and destroyed one of our E-readers -despite showing it to the crew who tried to help, the toilet overflowed with sewage water that sloshed around our bathroom for a few hours because the ocean crossing was too rough to be able to fix the issue -there is a generator on the main outside floor next to the table so while you eat you have to talk over it and inhale diesel fumes that stink. Because it is not enjoyable to sit there you have to go up top. Here there are nice views and it is nice to hang out but there is not much sun protection and almost no rain protection -we lost electrical power for a couple nights Because the water clarity is often bad, I don’t think it’s worth it to go to the outer islands, and thus the liveaboard is not worth the exorbitant cost. You are better off staying in a nice hotel on Praslin and/or La digue and doing day trips.
