The place to go for wreck diving
I stayed on the boat for 8 days diving 4 wrecks every day, and when I left there were still many we had not seen, I was Tech diving but other diver where mostly recreational level, the wreck are at all depth so OK for all diver but some of the deeper ones were 60+ m so having deco cylinder helped reduce the deco times. The boat was moored while we were on it, which worked well as she is mored close to the main wreck and has fast Dive boat to take you to the dive site, we were comfortably doing 4 dived per day with meals or snack waiting between dives. The captin Lance was a working history book of the area which added to the interest

We had the wrecks to ourselves
I think we really lucked out that the week we spent was a quiet one and so it was just myself and another diver with our guide penetrating the wrecks and really getting an amazing diving experience. So much to see and the Captain and his thorough and informative dive briefings was great. Lance has so much knowledge about the history and it helped to really get into the dives. Food was like home cooked meals and excellent comfort food. I thought that the fact that all dive sites are reached by tender would be a hassle but the fact that the mothership just sits in the best location in the lagoon made the rides out to the sites short and the time on board just gentle rocking. Trip of a lifetime.

Most Amazing Diving experience ever!
I really had a great time diving the wrecks of Truk Lagoon, with experienced and friendly dive guides who would take you to the most interesting places of a wreck, with some deep wreck penetrations at times, while safely staying outside at other times. Safety is a prime concern, but so is diver's experience! It was always possible to ask for specific wreck sites, diving up to 5 different wrecks a day. Captain Lance's impressive stories collecte over 30 years through direct contact with both Japanese an American war veterans makes this experience even more unforgettable! I would definitely come back!

Liveaboard of a different kind
The Thorfinn is not an ordinary liveaboard dive ship, but a piece of history to experience - in several aspects. It is a former whaling ship that is over 70 years old and has been converted into a floating dive center. So you shouldn't expect a 5-star luxury liveaboard: the cabins are functional and each one is slightly different and you can hear the generators, but that's all part of the experience. It offers a lot of space with large common areas and decks, so you only have to visit the cabin to sleep. In contrast to many other liveaboards, the Thorfinn has been firmly anchored in a place between two islands for several years, the dive sites are approached by small dinghies (5-15 min drive), which makes the selection of the dive site much more flexible (up to 5 wrecks per day are possible). Captain Lance uses the Thorfinn for his retirement and loves to tell stories from over 60 years of seafaring (over 40 of them with the Thorfinn around the world) and about all the wrecks of the lagoon. The food is good, but here you have to consider the supply situation in Micronesia: There is what is available. However, the cook tries very hard to make the best of it and responds to food requests as far as possible. Conclusion: If you like diving and love wrecks, this is the place for you. However, if you want a 5-star hotel and a large selection of food, Chuuk is generally wrong, even the hotels on land cannot offer a higher standard here. By the way: Even as a tech diver, I recommend booking the regular rate. It is better to accept relatively short bottom times at the wrecks and rather dive several wrecks. The guides know the highlights of each wreck and it is much more worth seeing the highlights of 4 wrecks than diving 2 in more detail. In addition, with mono cylinders (on board there are 100cufts as well as 100cufts) you are much more mobile in the wreck. All wrecks are located in such a way that they can be dived with mono cylinder and a total diving time of 30 to 60 minutes.

All dive sites are wrecks, wreck lovers should go
This trip is suitable for all wreck lovers. All dive sites are wrecks dives without reef dives, we don't need to suffer from reef dives(I extremely hate fish and reefs=V=) Visited more than 20 wrecks, scheduled 3-4 dives per day since the weather condition was very bad Luckily, I still visited lots of interesting and attractive engine rooms =] Crews and dive guides are very friendly and helpful=V=

An unforgettable experience
Diving the Japanese wrecks in Chuuk Lagoon is a world-class experience. The captain of the Thorfinn is a remarkable asset to this experience because he's been diving these wrecks for more than 40 years. He knows all their histories and what makes each one special. The dive guides are to be commended for being able to find every wreck, to guide you in and out of all the interior spaces, and to show you what's really worth seeing. The rental equipment is new and well-maintained. The Thorfinn is more than 50 years old and shows it. The cabins on the upper deck near the lounge are okay, but the lower deck cabins are airless, dark and cramped. Doors get stuck. Faucets don't turn. The food is dull and repetitive. We didn't have fish once, and there were few fresh fruits or vegetables. The internet is worthless. It functions for only a few hours a day and doesn't have enough bandwidth for any web pages to load. During my week aboard the Thorfinn, we never once changed our anchorage. So, it was as though we were on a floating hotel with poor food and no internet. A good alternative to the Thorfinn would be to stay ashore in a hotel like the Blue Lagoon and go out in their dive boats. You'd get better food and internet. Still, my hat's off to the excellent dive guides and thanks to Captain Lance for his memorable tales.
