“Great staff, guests, and diving”
Highlights
The M/V Southern Sport is a sleek, fast, and comfortable ship that takes passengers to Socorro, the Revillagigedo archipelago, and the World's Aquarium - the Sea of Cortez. She accommodated 18 divers in 9 air-conditioned cabins with plenty of storage space. There is a wide choice of cabins to suit all budgets, from the lower-deck twin cabins with shared bathrooms to the upper-deck double suites with private bathrooms. Guests can experience sailing on the top deck, enjoying delicious meals, and getting together to watch movies on the main deck lounge, which includes a TV and entertainment area and a separate dining area spacious enough for 18 guests to enjoy 3 plentiful meals per day and complimentary soft drinks, beer, and wine. The sun deck is partially shaded and a great place to relax between dives.
The MV Southern Sport liveaboard schedules trips to some of Mexico’s best dive destinations. Itineraries cover the Socorro Islands and the Revillagigedo archipelago, where divers can dive with schooling hammerheads, playful giant manta rays, humpback whales during the migrations, or incredible Great White shark encounters. The large dive deck at the back of the boat offers ample room for kitting up and gear storage, and photographers are taken care of with camera tables, rinse tanks, and charging stations around the ship. Nitrox is available for those certified. Scientists, shark experts, and filmmakers love this ship because of its onboard configuration and service.

Exceeded expectations
The crew worked really hard throughout the trip to make the trip a memorable one. They were all very personable and paid attention to individual needs/wants and always had a smile on. Team effort. The cruise to Socorro was longer than I expected and rough at times. Definitely convert your money to pesos to get the best deal on the park fees. They made a group video at the end which they gave out which was a big bonus. Overall the crew made the trip.

Amazing trip although a lot of work needed
Although I had THE BEST time and experiences on this trip, with new friends and experiences and dives that completely surpassed my expectations, I feel a little disgruntled. The boat itself needs A-LOT of work. It’s tired and drab. The sleeping cabin tiny. No where to store luggage. Hooks not on the wall and just left on the shelves. Asked crew to fix to the wall and fix the broken lights on day 2- never got fixed. Water leaking down the walls and into sockets. Shower was barely warm and minimal pressure. Toilet flushed hot water for some reason. The dinghy had a leak. It needed to be pumped up MULTIPLE times a day, and would fill with water. The dinghy crew would drag gear onto it, which broke several items on divers gear. He was also sleeping during the dives, not watching for divers surfacing/ emergency. Gear hire- I paid $360 USD for gear that was did not fit. I experienced serval sores, blisters and bruises from this gear. I am a backpackers, therefore I can not bring my own gear. Previous live aboards requested items required, sizes etc before embarking, with even a try on before hand. I had no communication regarding this beforehand. A week later and I still have multiple wounds from ill fitting gear. Putting on gear that caused pain 4 times a day definitely tarnished the experience for me. The wildlife seen was spectacular, and our dive guide Marielle exceptional, I felt safe, and really felt her love and passion for the wildlife. The trip wouldn’t have been the same without her.
