Manta, manta, manta!

Being my first time to the Maldives, I was amazed with the topography of the whole country! Atolls are-thousands of big and small rings of land, each with mostly circular lagoon in the middle and just slivers of land between the lagoon and the outer Indian Ocean! Most of the atolls are un-inhabited, and the ones that have people on them are either small island communities with their distinct culture, history and dialects or they are fancy resorts with strings of small huts on the oceans where guests from all over the world pay good money to enjoy this paradise of sunshine, warm weather and calm sea that is filled with wondrous creatures! I travel quite a bit, but this is really the tops! Back to my passion: diving the ocean! I’ve never seen so many giant manta rays in my life (and I’ve dove all over!) as I was here on the Stingray Liveaboard! It was totally amazing! I seriously thought that they were following our dive boat every day! Those graceful huge creatures were there on our check dive, at their cleaning station near Male City, starting point of our journey, all the way to the last night of our trip where many were attracted to the torches of our special night dive and 2 of them actually were feeding on the planktons that were drawn by the strong spotlight installed at the back of Stingray in the evening…for hours on end! We, all seasoned divers, were totally mesmerized and stood staring and snapping photos and videos like mad, at these graceful majestic creatures, for hours on end! (Divers’) Heaven on earth! During a scheduled night dive where countless huge nurse sharks and large sting rays were fighting over food! There were many divers there, from different dive boats, yet there were so many sharks there, that I felt like they easily outnumbered us! In their frenzied pursuit for food, the big (but harmless) nurse sharks, with their funny-looking barbels that look like whiskers, rubbed their tough rubbery bodies against me and I felt like being glazed by fine-grain sandpaper (a nice feeling as the same time, one could sense their powerful bodies pulsating inside their tough skins! ) Wow! Wow! Wow! How much closer you can get to a shark in nature??!

Great diving week with helpfull staff

One week on boards of Stingray was short, we had great diving, even though the dive could have been a bit more organized sometimes, but it is not always easy to check current and the drop off area. We had great diving with many sharks and many mantas. Would recommend this boat to anyone on a budget! Check it out, great deal!
