The MV Raja Ampat Explorer is a fantastic budget-friendly option to explore the regions of Raja Ampat and the Banda Sea. The 33.5m M/V Raja Ampat Explorer caters to 14 guests in 7 cabins. Each double or twin cabin is en-suite with a hot shower, washbasin, and toilet and is fully air-conditioned. Social areas include an air-conditioned lounge with an entertainment system and dining seating for 14 guests. Meals are served buffet-style and are a mix of Indonesian and European dishes. A partially-covered sun deck is also a great place to relax and unwind with a beer whilst enjoying the stunning Indonesian views.

Amazing diving, great crew, a fantastic getaway
The trip was amazing. The crew are super friendly and kind. The amount of coral and fish are just unreal! The boat is a little dated but everything works perfectly. No luxury but plenty of comfort. The food was delicious but after 10 days we were a little tired of everything variations of the same 3 meals every day. The selection of drinks on board was pretty limited - only soft drinks and bintangs. It would’ve been great to have a bigger selection of drinks and a wider variety of fruits and snacks.

Great diving in raja ampat, both western and indonesian meals, if are up for some chilli, can even have a taste of crew food. dive sites are checked out for current etc before going, dm’s are experienced and knowledgeable and can communicate in english. books onboard for identifying fish. can rest in cabin, restaurant or on upper deck between dives. crew takes good care of camera equipment and dingy is always there to get you after dives. lots of water to take showers. nitrox available!

Excellent value for money, great experience with local company, perfect combo of great dives and food, relaxing and unforgettable
Everything about this trip was wonderful. The boat isn’t a brand-new luxury yacht, but the traditional wooden style actually felt far more relaxing and perfectly suited to a diving trip like this. If you’re looking for VIP treatment and fancy frills, this may not be the right choice for you. Likewise, if you need Western staff onboard to feel comfortable. For me, though, this trip is unbeatable in terms of value for money. The local crew were exceptionally kind, professional, and discreet throughout. During some more challenging dives (for example with downward currents), the dive guides handled the situation calmly and expertly, which gave a great sense of safety and confidence. Beyond the incredible diving, there were also opportunities to visit small villages and do short hikes, which added a very nice extra dimension to the experience.

Awesome trip
We unfortunately experienced delays getting to the boat, but the staff kept in touch the whole time and made us feel very welcome once we got there. Nothing ever seemed too much trouble and everybody had a smile on their face. The boat is old and a little dated but clean, comfortable and has everything you need. The food was great and nobody went hungry. A couple of issues with Nitrox supply and some air conditioning units not working properly, but they got sorted promptly. The diving is amazing and the dive guides were incredible. I don't know how they find all the amazing things they pointed out to us, from Wobbegong sharks to tiny nudi branch's and shrimps. There were times where the currents were quite strong but the guides help you out and look after you. The absolute highlight of the trip for me, has to be the huge Manta Ray (3-4m) at the cleaning station for at least 7 minutes in front of us. I cannot recommend this trip highly enough.

Perfect!
It was an amazing experience! I have wonderful memories of it. The crew and divemasters were excellent. They helped me when I had small health problems and were always there to answer our questions. The food was excellent and the boat very comfortable. I had everything I needed and felt safe throughout the trip. The dive sites are wonderful. I have rarely dived in such an unspoilt place filled with life. The colors of the corals are beautiful. This cruise is a must do if you want to dive in Raja Ampat, it was just perfect.

We had an amazing time. Great diving, island visit and the coffee and food is very good. Surprisingly there was free nitox and super fast Starlink internet everywhere.

10/10 experience for this solo traveler
I would 10/10 travel on the Raja Ampat Explorer again. I was a solo female traveler and had never been on a live aboard. Diego and Faldi, our dive guides, were so friendly, helpful, safety oriented and great at spotting both big things and the macros. The food was delicious. The sun deck was a perfect spot to be having both shady and sunny areas. If I am lucky enough to go back to Indonesia, I will most defiantly book with them again.

Raja Ampat is certainly worth the trip and this live aboard was mediocre overall.
This was my first time diving in Raja Ampat and it certainly did not disappoint. The diving itself and the diversity of sea life is truly worth the trip. As for the live aboard, I would rate this live aboard as mediocre. The food was not particularly great and the organization of some of the daily activities was a bit lackluster. Outside of that the cabins, towel service and showers were all reasonably decent for the price of the boat.

I hesitated a little when I initially booked this liveaboard because there are only a few reviews. But I booked it anyway, as the dates suited me. This turned out to be one of the best liveaboards. The diving is amazing. Manu, our dive guide was extremely experienced and when the extra mile when we requested for things. The eye for detail is amazing. The food is a mixture of Indonesian and chinese. Gali was a good cook who always never said no to whatever food request I threw his way. Thank you for this trip

Crew & Service: 20 / 10 pointsMega perfect! The crew on board is unique, super helpful, always friendly and always puts a smile on your face. Whether captain, cook or the service and boat team - even impossible things are made possible here. An absolutely outstanding service! Boat & equipment: 6 / 10 pointsUnfortunately, the boat is getting on in years and urgently needs a general renovation. A striking example: When a guest wanted to support himself on the wooden railing, it broke away completely. On closer inspection, it could be seen that the wood was completely eaten away by termites. Safety on board: 2 / 10 pointsVery poor and extremely expandable. Missing briefing: When entering the boat, there was no safety explanation (no emergency exits, no safety instructions, no information about oxygen or who is certified on board). Medical care: There was almost no first-aid kit on board – apart from ear drops, there was nothing available (no nasal spray, no antibiotics, no emergency medicine). Dives & guiding: The current was never checked directly in the water, but only from the boat. No guide went into the water in advance to check visibility or current. To do a night dive in extreme currents, although previously there was talk of "no to very low current", is simply not acceptable for me. Food & board: 5.5 / 10 pointsThe chef tried very hard, but the organization/quantity (probably due to the management) was disappointing. Quantity & second helping: There was simply too little food for 11 people (usually 1-2 main courses, 1 side dish, salad, in the evening also soup). Those who came to the buffet last often only caught leftovers. A second helping for the main course was not possible because there was nothing left (fruits or eggs in the morning were served later, but no main courses). Preparation: There were two very tasty fish, but it was served whole and not filleted. This made the boneless meal very difficult. Snacks & fruits: Unfortunately, there was no fruit bowl or fresh fruit (no bananas etc.) during the day. Only in the afternoon (4–5 p.m.) there was cake or an orange. Unfortunately, the biscuit packages provided were inedible. Drinks & service after dives: For breakfast there was only a small cup of orange juice (a carafe at the table would have been nicer). After the dives there were no freshly squeezed juices, as you know it from other boats, and after the cold night dive there was no warming tea. Overall rating: 6 / 10 pointsConclusion: The crew on board is absolutely outstanding and saves the stay with their warmth and enormous commitment. However, the boat itself, the safety standards and the catering can be greatly improved and do not meet expectations in places.

Great dive sites… bad boat experience
I would never ever return to this boat for the following reason : - we were not given a safety briefing - the boat is dirty… tables are not wiped down every day and my bathroom did not smell too nice… pls it was moldy - cruise director didn’t know what he was doing… plans were changed arbitrarily, I often saw him walking around the boat without a shirt on (so unprofessional), we were promised a dugong siting at his village but there were none to be seen after he insisted that he knows the area well and knows where they are … he didn’t listen to my complaints at all - the camera charging area is very small without ample space for divers with large camera set ups - the food was repetitive and actually not enough - not enough fruit available during and in between meals - not enough snacks available (just a tin of cookies that weren’t very good)

Would I recommed this boat?
It is very difficult to write a review for this boat because although the staff was excellent and the diving was great, there did not appear to be an emergency plan in place. This despite all the sinkings, fires, and deaths reported in recent years. More about this below, but first my review of other aspects of this boat. The Staff All staff were friendly and welcoming, going out of their way to provide assistance in any way possible, from helping zip up a wet suit to changing the time of our night dives so we could have dinner earlier. The Diving There were 13 divers divided into 3 groups, 2 groups of 4 and 1 group of 5, each led by a dive guide. The dive guides were excellent at organizing the loading of the dinghies used to take us to the dive sites, ensuring we entered and left the water safely, and pointing out marvelous aquatic life. Climbing the ladder with gear on was optional; they encouraged us to let them do the heavy lifting. Most days 4 dives were offered: 7 a.m., 10 a.m., 2 p.m., & a night dive at 6 p.m. Nitrox was used only for the first dive of the day, apparently because it took 4 hours for them to fill the tanks with nitrox. This was a concern. How many divers forgot to reset their dive computers to air for the remainder of the day? How may divers went into decompression and didn’t know it? Never mind the extra nitrogen load of diving multiple dives a day. There did not appear to be a diver recall system as none was mentioned. The Food The food was adequate but not great. Most times it was barely warm, even cold at times. For lunch and dinner, there were usually 2 different proteins provided, beef, chicken, pork, or seafood, along with white rice, soup, salad, and a vegetable dish which was often mushy. There were no desserts. I gave up my preferred vegetarian diet because most times there wasn’t a vegetarian entree available. I ate a lot of peanut butter and banana sandwiches. The snack at 4 p.m. was either a store bought cake role, banana chips, nothing particularly appetizing. The Boat It was older but appeared to be well maintained. Our beds were comfortable, and the air conditioning was working well. The bathrooms were small but functional. The only indoor lounging area was the dining area, which also included the camera table. Safety This is the area of concern. Even after requested, there was no communication of what do to in case of fire, simple things like where the fire extinguishers were located, where to gather if there was an emergency. The only information provided was that life jackets were in cubbies beneath the beds, and were located in the very far end, requiring crawling into the enclosed space. Since none of this was in place, we made sure to walk the boat on our own, just in case. The cabins on the lower deck had one stairway leading to the main deck. The emergency hatch located down the hall was blocked by a hose stored on top of the hatch, which we politely indicated should be placed elsewhere. There were no emergency lights available during power outages, and no directional signs indicating the way out. There were smoke detectors in each room. Three of the smoke detectors we checked had the battery disconnected. Would I recommend this boat? I would have to say no. Safety has to come first.

Could have been much better
There were multiple technical issues with the boat: - we got engine fumes several times under the deck in the cabins, and even in the dining room. Dangerous and sickening, especially dangerous during the night. - the electricity went out and it took them awhile to fix it (that's fine), and even after the fixes it kept going out and back for days (that's less fine) - I got stolen 100k IDR from my cabin. However, the boat is very nice, the cabins as well. It simply needs PROPER maintenance. After a week the food is sickening.. always the same and lacks fresh fruits and vegetables. It's all fried except the steamed rice. Very heavy. There was clearly a problem of fruits molding (I saw them), I believe that is why it disappeared very early in the trip.. except the water melon. The diving spots are awesome and the schedule is good but the guides could be better, more serious folks. Also, only one of the staff on the boat actually spoke a little English (one of the guides)!!! everyone else pretty much zero!! including the diving guide.

A dream site for divers
Overall it is a very nice place to dive. The weather was good and you just have to take into account that, in the days after the full moon, the current is stronger. I didn't like the condescension with which the guides sometimes treated me. Maybe because I was a woman who travels alone, I thought they forgot that I was just another customer, just like the others. I thanked Endro (I apologize if I don't spell his name correctly), the engine manager, for how well he treated me one day when I felt frankly bad. Overall, the crew was very friendly, too bad that the people I spent the most time with, were the ones who made me feel the most uncomfortable.
