With 13 municipalities located along the coast, restaurants and shops have no shortage to enjoy the region’s famous Limoncello liqueur or purchase handmade specialty goods like the Bambagina paper. This ancient paper, also called Amalfi paper, was produced at mills like the one owned by the Milano family in Amalfi town.

The Valle Delle Ferriere is a protected nature reserve found in the mountains near Scala. This special gem passes through a deep valley that is lined with lush vegetation and prehistoric nature. Take a hike along the 5km loop and pass through centuries-old ironworks as you journey towards the gushing waterfalls. These water sources provided the energy for the many watermills found regionally.

Take a day excursion to areas like Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii. Day trips to this world-famous volcano that ended the lives of an estimated 16,000 people in the area of Pompeii in AD 79. Though Mt. Vesuvius has not erupted since 1944, it remains the only active volcano on the European mainland. View the excavated ruins of the city it swallowed and the people frozen in time, covered by ash. This UNESCO World Heritage Site will surely leave lasting memories during your time along the Amalfi Coast.

The Amalfi Coast is also home to Punta Campanella, a marine protected area at the tip of the Sorrentine Peninsula. From the tower, Torre di Montalto gazes out upon the sea and hopes to spot a fabled Siren swimming below. It is fabled that this area is where the great Ulysses passed through, tied to the mast of his ship.  Snorkel in the crystal-blue waters keeping an eye out for the region's famous barracuda population.

Across from Punta Campanella is the island of Capri. Stopovers at Capri should include the intermediate-level one-hour hike up Mount Solaro. The summit can also be accessed via a chair lift to enjoy a less strenuous experience or ride down the lift to have the best of both worlds. Finish your day with a dip in the Blue Grotto. This massive flooded cave can be accessed by sea or by land, though if you come by sea, you may need to duck to fit through the small one-meter opening.

The Grotta dello Smeraldo, or Emerald Grotto, is located in Conca dei Marini. It is accessible via an elevator shaft or a boat ride and is a beautiful example of one of Italy’s many grottos and natural coves. It would make a wonderful addition to any day excursion plans.

Cruises to the Amalfi Coast are departing at ports such as Sorrento, Positano, Salerno, and Naples. The many marinas and coves will provide access to land excursions with ease. Airports serving the Amalfi Coast are Naples (NAP) and Salerno (QSR).

Best Time to Cruise the Amalfi Coast

Though located in the Mediterranean, it can get cold in the winter months, with temperatures averaging around 10°C or 50°F and rougher sea conditions. Therefore, visiting the Amalfi Coast from spring through fall is recommended to enjoy the warmer temperatures, peaking in summer at around 30°C/86°F, and the waters are calm and soothing. The clear blue Tyrrhenian Sea will have an average temperature of 26°C/78°F in summer, making snorkeling or swimming possible all day long.

Top Tips While Cruising the Amalfi Coast

As there is beautiful sunshine and warmer temperatures, it is strongly suggested to bring sunshades such as a hat and sunglasses with you on your journey. A reef-safe sunscreen and towel are also recommended for the many beaches and day trips you will surely encounter. Bring layers that can easily be added or removed as you cruise around the ocean or take adventure walks through the mountains. The breeze may feel chilly after a day of sun exposure. Though many businesses are now using contactless payment, it is wise to bring cash for smaller businesses that do not accept card payments or for adding a gratuity to your excursions and services.
