The s/v Noorderlicht is a 46m 2-masted schooner offering exciting adventure cruises to the east of Greenland and the west coast of Spitzbergen all year round. Built in 1910, she is now perfectly suited to explore the Arctic. The SV Noorderlicht caters to just 20 passengers in 10 twin-bunk cabins. Each cabin has storage space, a washbasin with hot & cold water, and shared bathroom facilities conveniently located on the cabin deck. As can be expected of a historic sailing vessel, the SV Noorderlicht is cozy yet basic, with an indoor bar, lounge and dining area, and deck space, a great spot for whale watching and taking in the spectacular views.

Velero antiguo y cómodo

El Noorderlicht es un barco de hace 100 años, reconvertido en goleta de dos palos, más amplio y cómodo de lo que pudiera parecer en un primer momento. La navegación a vela no siempre es posible, y es una experiencia interesante para los pasajeros, que pueden participar en las tareas del arriado e izado de las velas, pero puede ser también incómoda por los vaivenes del mar. La comida era de buena calidad (en las cenas) pero escasa en cantidad, algo racionada, y con muy poca variedad en los desayunos (pan con mantequilla y mermelada y yogur con cereales). Algunas restricciones alimentarias no fueron atendidas de forma clara hasta bien entrado el viaje. Había bebidas a bordo a precio razonable para lo que es Noruega, pero nos decepcionó ver que... ¡no había ron! Las cervezas especiales de la fábrica de cervezas de Longyearbyen lo compensaban ampliamente. La tripulación fue muy amable en todo momento y las guías eran excelentes, haciendo su trabajo de forma profesional pero siempre intentando aportar algo más y buscando que las excursiones fueran más interesantes. La ruta de finales de agosto (Arctic Fall) no es quizás la más apropiada para una primera visita a Svalbard. Los fiordos de Bellsund son poco visitados y realmente el barco es el único que pasa por ahí, pero ir al sur en lugar de al norte (donde está la mayor parte del hielo y de la fauna local) hace que los avistamientos de animales sean mucho más limitados que si se va al norte. Otra decisión que no compartimos fue la de no visitar, tal y como sí explicitaba el programa, las ciudades de Barentsburg o Pyramiden "por motivos políticos", entendiendo que Svalbard se trata de una zona internacional y que Pyramiden no deja de ser una ciudad abandonada que también es una reliquia cultural. El viaje fue prácticamente "salvado" por el avistamiento de una osa polar el último día; en esa tarde también navegamos por un glaciar y vimos frailecillos y belugas muy de cerca; realmente fue un día memorable y ojalá el resto de días hubiéramos podido tener experiencias tan intensas y sostenidas.

Pleins ! - l'approche des glaciers - le temps de rencontre avec les morses - le "mini concert" de piano dans la salle de spectacle à Pyramiden - les randos à terre - les temps pour mettre les voiles (malheureusement pas suffisamment souvent)
