What To Expect On A La Paz Liveaboard

Liveaboard diving in La Paz is well known for the large pelagics which migrate past here with some of the most famous being the Whale Sharks and their juveniles, and the extremely large schools of Hammerhead sharks. La Paz is the capital city of Baja California, it is a tranquil town and a perfect first destination to discover the beauty of the marine world of Mexico. Essentially it is the gateway into diving the Sea of Cortez. It is also known for the large Sea Lion colonies made up of curious and cheeky sea lions who love teasing divers.

      LA PAZ UNDERWATER

There is a large variety of larger species which pass through here. The largest variety of species are present in the months December to April. These are mostly winter months; when the plankton in the water is at its highest, attracting many animals to come and feed and they are migrating to warmer waters for breeding and giving birth. During these months on a La Paz liveaboard you will have the chance to see pods of Dolphins, Orcas, breeding Humpback whales, schools of hammerhead sharks, Manta Rays and more. Californian Brown Sea lions are always present here, these playful creatures are very curious about divers so will come quite close. In October and November you will see juvenile Whale Sharks, a beautiful sight. There are also many schools of fish in this area including Tuna, Jacks and Wahoos.

The water temperatures range from 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Farenheit) to 29 degrees Celsius (84 degrees Farenheit) and the visibility ranges from 15m (45ft) to 30m (90ft); July to December have the clearest waters.

      LA PAZ DIVE SITES

El Bajo: This is the dive site which is most visited by the Liveaboard.com liveaboards. This dive site is made up of three underwater peaks lined up and therefore also known as The Seamount. The shallowest peak is 17m (52ft) from the surface and the deepest is 27m (83ft) from the surface. The central peak is where the mooring lines are and you descend. Due to the water surging against the peaks, a lot of nutrients are extracted, bringing a lot of marine wildlife. This site is located a few hours from La Paz by boat, so to take full advantage of your time, a liveaboard trip is the best way to travel here.

Los Islotes: Also known as the The Colony is where a colony of 200 plus Californian Brown Sea Lions live that will provide divers with a fun and exciting dive.

There are more dive sites in this area but these are the main ones that our Liveaboards visit.

      TIPS FOR DIVERS

La Paz , in general, is an advanced diver dive area due to strong currents and big waves, however, each liveaboard has their own minimum dive experience level, please always check this before booking and it is important to remember your dive logs/logbooks. It is possible to rent equipment but it will be more comfortable yourself to use your own gear, so if possible bring that with. With the large diversity of marine life you will have the chance to see, it would be completely worth it to bring an underwater camera, to capture the memories.

The main language is Spanish, however English is widely spoken all around the country and on the liveaboards. The currency is the Mexican Peso and you can easily exchange all popular currencies such as US dollars and Euros etc. The plug is the same plug as the US; two flat prongs with the standard voltage being 127V. Please remember to bring an adaptor for all your electrics if you are not coming from the US.

      HOW TO GET THERE

La Paz is the capital city of Baja California and the port from which the Mexican liveaboards depart is called Marina Fonutar. The closest International airport is El Alto International airport, which has flights arriving from international destinations such as the United States, Peru and other South American destinations, and from multiple domestic locations as well. The airport is located approximately 15km (8mi) from La Paz centre.
